Find the Hero Within: Why Hero Quest Matters

September 3, 2025

This fall, something extraordinary is coming to The Magic House, and you might already be seeing clues. If you’ve visited recently, you may have noticed life-size book kiosks popping up in your favorite exhibits. These aren’t just oversized storybooks, they’re the beginning of a journey. A quest, in fact. A Hero Quest.

Opening September 20, Hero Quest is a brand-new interactive exhibit designed to inspire children and families to discover the hero within themselves. Based on the best-selling book series Ordinary People Change the World by Brad Meltzer and illustrator Chris Eliopoulos, it’s a scavenger hunt through the Museum, guided by a Hero Quest Passport, where kids will explore the lives of real-world heroes like Dolly Parton, Harriet Tubman, Albert Einstein, and Frida Kahlo. At each stop, they’ll step into immersive environments and take part in hands-on activities that highlight the character traits that made these individuals extraordinary, traits like: Courage, Kindness, and Curiosity.

But Hero Quest is more than just fun. It’s part of a national initiative called Fostering Character Through Children’s Museums, funded by Lilly Endowment Inc., and developed in partnership with CharacterPlus. The goal? To help children build positive character traits through play, storytelling, and meaningful family conversations. At The Magic House, we believe museums aren’t just places to play, they’re places to learn and grow. That’s why Hero Quest includes the Hero Quest Gallery, a space designed to spark reflection. Here, families are invited to sit down together, share stories about the heroes in their own lives, and talk about the traits they hope to nurture in their children. What does it mean to be brave? How do we show kindness? Why is curiosity so powerful? These conversations matter and Hero Quest reminds us that true heroism starts with character. It’s about doing the right thing, asking questions, helping others, and standing up for what’s right, even when it’s hard.

So yes, Hero Quest is fun. It’s colorful, creative, and packed with surprises. But it’s also a call to action. A chance for families to reflect, connect, and grow together. Because every child has the potential to change the world, and every parent has the power to help them see it.

Save the date, Saturday, September 20 and come explore, reflect and find the hero within.
