Magic House

Families will be transported to the vibrant country of India this summer!

ST LOUIS (DATE) Prepare to be transported to the vibrant and diverse land of India as The Magic House brings it’s cultural exhibit, Namaste India, back to the Museum after traveling to other children’s museums across the nation. Families will be transported into the rich tapestry of Indian culture, from Bollywood to the Taj Mahal, and from playing cricket to practicing yoga, Namaste India will open on June 8.

Namaste India is more than just an exhibit; it’s an interactive experience designed to foster global awareness and appreciation for the wonders of Indian life. Through a series of six immersive environments, visitors will embark on a journey that celebrates the art, food and traditions that define this timeless culture.

Namaste India will feature a variety of immersive environments including:

  • Family Home: Step into a traditional Indian home and create your own rangoli art, explore the backyard garden, and prepare a traditional tiffin box lunch to take to school.
  • Tuk Tuk and Food Cart: Take a ride in a Tuk Tuk and indulge in the flavors of India at a bustling street food cart. From fresh fruit and vegetables to refreshing mango juice, experience the vibrant culinary scene using advanced technology QR code purchasing.
  • Taj Mahal Photo Opportunity, Bollywood: Strike a pose in front of an iconic Taj Mahal backdrop and experience the glitz and glamour of Bollywood cinema. Children can put on temporary Henna tattoos, bindia and dress up in colorful sarees.
  • School: Discover the geography and history of India while you create a Republic of India flag, learn Hindi words and numbers and dress like a student in India.
  • Market: Shop at an Indian market filled with spices, teas, colorful textiles, and explore traditional Indian art forms like block printing.
  • Dhaba: Experience the warmth and hospitality of a roadside restaurant, where families can dine on authentic dishes like chapatti and tea.

To ensure an authentic and culturally accurate experience, The Magic House formed the Namaste India advisory committee, consisting of professionals from the St. Louis area, all of whom have deep-rooted connections to India. This committee played a pivotal role in the original exhibit creation process.

“We hope that this new exhibit will encourage global awareness and cultural appreciation and showcase the beauty, diversity and vibrancy of India,” said Mahendra Gupta, member of the Magic House Namaste India advisory committee and Former Dean and Virgil Professor, Olin Business School, Washington University. “We are excited to bring new traditions and experiences to St. Louis families, as doorways to new languages, celebrations and traditions.”

Namaste India is part of The Magic House’s nationally traveling cultural exhibit series currently featuring Children’s China, Kenya’s Kids and Argentina’s Niños and Ciao Bambini. The cultural series is designed to help children and families build an interest and empathy for the diverse cultures from around the world.
